The Greater Philadelphia Locksmiths Association’s 62nd Anniversary Convention will be held September 28 through October 1, 2011, at the Hilton Philadelphia Airport hotel in Philadelphia, PA. Highlights include:
Ñ Nine cutting edge, hands-on Training Classes, most taught by nationally recognized instructors. Many of the classes are NJ State Certified CEU classes to help you acquire or maintain your NJ State Locksmith license. From basic locksmithing skills classes, journeyman level classes, and more advanced classes in safes, electronic access control and automotive, we’re sure you will find several that will interest you. Our industry is becoming more specialized and many of these classes can help you find your niche.
Ñ Crazy Hat Friday Night Social. Bring your favorite bowler, Fez, beret, top hat or whatever you have – the wackier the better! If you can wear it on your head, we want to see it! There will be prizes for the craziest hats. Renew industry friendships and start some new ones while you enjoy beer, wine and good food. In this intense, hands-on class, the student will learn the basic techniques to open mechanical combination locks by drilling. Students will use both straight and angle drilling. If time permits, students will drill for the relock trigger (RLT), the lever screw, and receive instruction on drill and transfer techniques. Measurements for many of the combination locks found on today’s containers will be provided. Drilling techniques for hardplate and other barrier materials will also be discussed. Eye protection is a must, and students should also bring a penlight or scope, drill motor, several sharp 1/8” and ¼” drill bits, 25’ extension cord, end or diagonal cutters, vice grips, assorted Phillips and slotted screwdrivers, pencil and paper. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student.

BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE SECURITY PROFESSIONAL
Instructor: Tony Fiorini, CRL
This one day class is designed with the security tech in mind. How a camera works, why it does what it does, and how to make it work for you are the principles of this class. Photos required for tech support, archives, insurance claims, forensics, job estimation, advertising, and web site enhancement are just a few reasons for understanding your camera and how it can make money for you. Topics covered are elementary theory, low light shooting, macro shooting (close up), advanced techniques for adverse shooting conditions, and student hands-on shooting while applying the learned principles. Time permitting, an introduction to photo post-processing and photography equipment will be covered. Students of this class will achieve the ability to overcome the “camera” taking bad photographs. Students are required to bring their digital camera, a fully charged battery, an empty memory card and their camera’s instruction book. Students will be taking lots of notes in this class. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to all students. Students who check the appropriate box on the registration form and include the additional $20.00 will receive a 4 CEU certificate for their NJ State Locksmith License renewal. Students must bring their NJ State License to class to receive their CEU’s.

BASIC ELECTRICITY FOR LOCKSMITHS

The use of electronics in locks and locking systems continues to grow at a rapid pace. This course begins with fundamental electricity theory and focuses on those aspects that apply to modern access control and electronic locking systems. Students will explore the basics of electronics pertaining to the electronic access control industry and how electricity is created and utilized. The various relationships regarding electricity and how it pertains to the selection of hardware and troubleshooting procedures will also be covered. Students should bring small screwdrivers, wire cutters, wire strippers and a volt-ohm meter. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to all students.

Separate your business from the pack! During this comprehensive 2-day advanced class, students will explore many advanced master keying techniques that will help you “give the customer what they want”. Under-utilized master keying methods including matrix, spider and rotating constant will be discussed in-depth. Exploiting the almost limitless master key variations available in total position progression will also be thoroughly demonstrated, and a method of expanding a “maxed-out” system. We’ll also explore other topics like assuming control of an existing master key system, as well as system specification and application methods. You can be sure that these techniques aren’t found in any software program! A thorough understanding of basic master keying is essential to get the most from this class. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to all students. Students who check the appropriate box on the registration form and include the additional $20.00 will receive a 16 CEU certificate for their NJ State Locksmith License renewal. INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOTIVE LOCKSMITHING *
Instructor: Stacy Hetchler, CAL
With the growing complexity of security systems in today’s automobiles, key generation, both duplication of existing keys and origination when keys have been lost, have become a very profitable specialty for the properly equipped and trained locksmith. This class will cover the basic tools required, including readers for key generation, (i.e. Determinators, Decoder King, Lishi, EZ Readers, Kobra Readers), Scoping, Impressioning, and when we have to take something apart. Basic security features of the locks will be discussed (i.e. sidebars, clutches and split wafers) and when and where we find codes. The Instructor will cover electronic security starting with VATS and continuing with transponders all the way through rolling code systems. Transponder programming equipment (i.e. Advanced Diagnostics, Ilco TKO, Hotwire, DMAX and more) will be covered and discussed as well as cloners, such as Ilco’s RW series, AD900 and the Zed Bull. There will be videos showing hands-on use of the mentioned equipment and paper hand-outs. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student.

advanced AUTOMOTIVE LOCKSMITHING *
Instructor: Stacy Hetchler, CAL
Prerequisite for this class is completion of Introduction to Automotive Locksmithing on Thursday or background and knowledge comparable to completion of that class. Topics covered will be the more advanced techniques used to generate keys, such as scoping high security locks. Covered will be the Tibbe system and the new GM, Lexus, Ford and Kia high security keys/systems. The instructor will cover eprom reading and programming. This will include transponders programmed from the data dumps and finding the PIN from reading the data dump. Keys will be programmed into a BMW EWS 3 system and you will extract the PIN from a Nissan BCM unit. There will be a hands-on demo of the Lishi pick/readers. The different key cutting machines available will be discussed, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of each. The day will wrap up with a discussion of the different vendors’ software programs available to handle the newer systems, such as VW’s CAN, Ford 80 Bit system and Toyota’s new system. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to each student.

This class will introduce students to the tools, skills and information that are useful for beginning motorcycle locksmithing. Students will disassemble and reassemble various motorcycle locks. Many types of lock systems will be covered. Students will learn the easiest way to generate keys in the extended hands-on portion of the class. This will include a wide variety of tools that will enable the student to gain confidence sight reading, impressioning and using the wafer readers. This class includes the basics of motorcycle key systems, special key cutting equipment, key blank selection and lock code information. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to all students.

This is a mandatory class for the Security Professional of the 21st Century. The areas covered will include the new International Building & Fire Code IBC-2006, Underwriters Laboratories listings for hardware, Accessibility, Doors, N.F.P.A. 80-2007, 101-2006, Door and Hardware Institute guide to the ADA Act of 1990. At the conclusion of the training, the student will be familiar with Model Building and Fire Codes pertaining to hardware in the Means of Egress, Life Safety and alternative approaches, ADA hardware, accessibility, doors and labels, Underwriters Laboratories testing procedure and how it determines what hardware we sell, and most importantly avoid any legalities with your work. The final 2 hours of this class will cover your mandatory requirement for Industrial Safety for NJ licensing. The areas covered will include the metal cutting, grinding, drilling, punching, and welding machines. We will follow OSHA standards for industrial safety. Students who check the appropriate box on the registration form and include the additional $20.00 will receive a 6 CEU certificate in ADA & Life Safety Codes and a 2 CEU certificate in Industrial & Shop Safety for their NJ State Locksmith License renewal. Students must bring their NJ State License to class to receive their CEU’s.

The demand for electronic access control continues to grow at a rapid pace. This hands-on class will take you from initial site survey, system layout and hardware selection to wiring and installation. Students will learn electric strike and mag lock application and installation and how to professionally wire and install an electronic access control system. You will learn methods that will enable the job to go quicker, easier and be more cost effective with the end result being a professionally installed system that will pass any code inspection. You will also learn stand- alone type locks, switches, relays, and wiring drawings will be discussed. Students should bring small screwdrivers, wire cutters, wire strippers and a volt-ohm meter. A GPLA certificate suitable for framing will be awarded to all students. Students who check the appropriate box on the registration form and include the additional $20.00 will receive a 7 CEU certificate for their NJ State Locksmith License renewal. Students must bring their NJ State License to class to receive their CEU’s.

Thomas J. Demont, AHC/CML, CSI has been in the locksmithing and security profession for over 50 years, starting his career in his father’s shop in Pittsburgh, PA. Tom served for 10 years in the US Navy as a Locksmith & Physical Security Specialist and went on to found several security companies. He is a certified ALOA ACE instructor and has taught here at GPLA and across the country for various associations and organizations. Tom is a Philadelphia Award recipient and is currently serving as the president of ALOA.
Chuck Dixon, CML is the owner of Evesham Security Technologies in Marlton, NJ, and has over 20 years of locksmithing and electronic security equipment experience. He has spent the last 15 years heavily involved in the sale, specification, design and installation of CCTV equipment.
Tony Fiorini CRL has been a working locksmith and safe technician for 20 years. He is a certified ACE instructor for ALOA and SAVTA as well as a certified continuing education instructor for the State of New Jersey. In addition to teaching and writing articles, he is an associate editor for Locksmith Ledger International. He currently hold patents for two unique safe lock designs and a portion of his business is the creation of custom safe door interiors.
Tom Foxwell is a member of the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) and Vice President of the Baltimore Chapter. He is a certified ALOA ACE instructor with factory certifications in Kaba- Unican, Securitron and HES. He currently works for Security Products Marketing and is serving as a NE Director for ALOA.
Stacy Hetchler, CAL, is a successful, advanced automotive locksmith providing 17 years of dedicated service to south central Texas. He brings efficient ideology & innovation to the industry with his instruction techniques, published articles with internationally recognized KeyPro.com, and trustworthy, reliable tech support and BETA testing.
Vernon Kelley, CPL, CJIL is an accomplished locksmith and author of several locksmithing related books and articles, including Institutional Lock Shop Management. He has served on the Board of Directors for ALOA and the ILA (where he also served as Treasurer on the National level and President of the Delaware Valley Chapter), and currently manages a professional lock shop for the College of New Jersey, where he oversees mechanical and electronic security. He has taught numerous professional courses for locksmiths over the past several years.
Randy Mize has 32 years as an automotive locksmith and has made transponders and high-security his priority. He is also a consultant to aftermarket tool manufacturers and O.E. automobile manufacturers. Randy is responsible for many innovations in Automotive Locksmithing, and is currently working on developing new tools and software for the industry. He is the inventor of the Lockmasters' High-Security Flip Pick and the Mercedes Drill Template.
Michael E. Nimmo has worked for Diebold, Inc. for 18 years servicing ATMs, alarm and camera systems, remote banking devices as well as safe and vault products. He currently serves as one of two regional Technical Specialists at Diebold and provides technical support to more than 400 safe and vault techs nationwide. Mike currently serves the GPLA as the Editor of the Newsletter and is on the Board of Directors.
Joseph R Reustle, CPS is owner of JR’s Lock and Safe company in Atco NJ and has been working in the industry for 20 years. He has been an instructor for both SAVTA and other local locksmith associations. He also has been an assistant instructor to Dave McOmie in many of Dave’s classes for the past 5 years. He specializes in opening high security safe, but continues to offer traditional locksmithing and access control services to his clients. He has held offices in the past for both GPLA and SJLA.
Clifford L. Shafer, CPS, CML is part-owner of CLC Locksmiths in Cinnaminson, NJ and has been in the industry for over 30 years. He has taught X-07, X-08 & X-09 classes for Kaba-Mas (formerly Mas-Hamilton) across the USA and in Japan, as well as other classes for GPLA. Cliff has served continuously in various offices for GPLA since 1988, including President and Chairman of the Board of Directors.
John Truempy, CRL, CMIL, is an accomplished professional commercial, institutional and investigative locksmith with extensive advanced training and experience in master keying, system design, key control and commercial and institutional hardware. He is on the national and local chapter boards of the Institutional Locksmiths’ Association where he has served as Vice President, Chairman of the Board, and Co-chair of the Certification Committee. John is employed as a full time institutional locksmith at the University of Pennsylvania.
Steve Young is often referred to as "The World's Leading Authority on Car Opening", which his Quick Entry Car Opening Manuals can attest to. Steve has built his reputation by providing accurate and reliable car opening information to the locksmith community for years. He has personally disassembled hundreds of door panels to guarantee you that each opening method is the easiest and safest way to gain entry.
